Private & guided Biblical Berea tour from Thessaloniki
Saint Paul visited Macedonia, Northern Greece on two of his missionary journeys, establishing some of the earliest Christian communities & churches in Europe. Biblical tours in Greece and early Christianity sites have gained popularity in recent years, as more and more travelers mainly from U.S.A express interest in exploring the true history and significance of Christianity in its early years. Here are the Saint Paul related sites to visit in this region:
Berea
Veria or Berea was the third important city for Saint Paul in Northern Greece. He preached there and converted many locals (both Greeks and Jews) to Christianity. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient city, including the Agora, the Bema of Saint Paul and the old Jewish Synagogue. The Bema is a raised platform where Saint Paul believed to have preached.
The Apostle of the Nations was warmly welcomed since his first visit and his preaching had a great impact on Greeks and the Jews. Saint Paul’s passage through Berea or Veria and the impact of his preaching, indicates the significance of this Macedonian town at the first steps of Christianity.
It also highlights the important role that the town played for the spreading and establishment of Christianity in Greece. Saint Paul is the Patron Saint of Methoni, a nice and quiet seaside town just 50km from the town of Veria.
Nowadays it is a summer holidays resort, well know of its long sandy beaches and for its fresh fish and mussels served in the traditional Greek taverns of the area. Methoni was a thriving ancient city with a major port and a lot of Greek, Macedonian and Roman history.
Even though Methoni not referred in the Scriptures, it is highly possible that it was the actual port of departure of Saint Paul to Athens after driven out from Berea.
