It was the site of Saint Paul’s one of the first European sermon, leading to the establishment of a Christian church amongst the oldest ones in Europe. During the spring of 50 A.D Saint Paul, Silas and Timothy left Philippi for Thessaloniki. Along the way they established churches in various settlements and towns, so that the Gospel would soon be spread throughout the region of ​​Macedonia, Greece.The Roman persecutors had scourged and tortured Saint Paul and Silas in Philippi.

With the wounds still open on their backs, they had to endure yet another harsh trial. Walking along Via Egnatia for many days, they reached a hilltop on the east side of Thermaic Gulf and once more gazed upon the deep blue Aegean Sea. For the very first time, they were able to see the amphitheater-shaped city of Thessalonica and the majestic bulk of Mount Olympus, the legendary home of the gods.

When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
