The Biblical Neapolis
The Biblical Neapolis, an amazing Greek coastal city. The Mediterranean Sea and more specifically the Aegean Sea is renowned for its beauty, and coastal cities often boast stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Due to their strategic location, many Mediterranean cities have a long and complex history, often influenced by various civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans. Their architecture, art, and cultural traditions reflect rich history and tradition. Neapolis, a city founded in the late 7th century BC by settlers from the island of Thassos, was one of several Thassian colonies established along the Greek coast to exploit the region’s rich gold and silver mines, particularly those in the nearby Pangaion Mountain. King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great later took advantage of these mines.
Archaeological evidence from the archaic period indicates the worship of Parthenos/Virgin, a female deity associated with Athena. Neapolis gained independence from Thassos in the late 6th century BC and began issuing its own silver coins featuring the head of Gorgo. During the Peloponnesian War (411 BC), Neapolis resisted a siege by Spartan and Thassian forces, maintaining its loyalty to Athens. Athens honored Neapolis for its loyalty with two decrees in 410 and 407 BC. The military Roman road Via Egnatia passed through the city and helped commerce to flourish. It became a Roman city in 168 BC, and was a base for Brutus and Cassius in 42 BC, before their defeat in the Roman battle of Philippi.
Saint Paul along with his companions disembarked at the port of Neapolis during his second missionary journey.
Book of Acts. 16.
‘’ From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis’’.
