Saint Paul’s footsteps in Thessalonica: early Christianity

During the spring of 50 A.D Saint Paul, Silas and Timothy left Philippi for Thessaloniki. Along the way, they established churches in various settlements and cities, so that the Gospel would soon be spread throughout the region of ​​Macedonia in Greece.

The Roman persecutors had scourged and tortured Saint Paul and Silas in Philippi. With the wounds still open on their backs, they had to endure yet another harsh trial. Walking along Via Egnatia for many days, they reached a hilltop on the east side of Thermaic Gulf and once more gazed upon the deep blue Aegean Sea. For the very first time, they were able to see the amphitheater-shaped city of Thessalonica and the majestic bulk of Mount Olympus, the legendary home of the gods.

The Jewish community of the city is one of the oldest in Europe, with origins tracing back to the Hellenistic period (4^th century B.C). From ancient times to the modern era, the Jewish presence in this historic city has contributed to its cultural, economic, and social fabric, leaving a legacy that resonates to this day.

As was his custom, Saint Paul visited the Great Synagogue of Thessalonica, which was the Jewish religious center for the entire Macedonian province. He began his ministry in the Synagogue, the Jewish place of worship. On the first three Saturdays, Saint Paul preached at the Synagogue and based on the Old Testament, about Jesus Christ, as the awaited Messiah, who was announced by the prophets. Some of the Jews were convinced by Saint Paul’s words, but most of them, the “great multitude” of believers came from the locals. Thessalonica’s religious landscape was a complex tapestry of traditional Greek polytheism and Roman imperial cults.

Great temples dedicated to various deities, such as mighty Zeus, Apollo and Aphrodite, dotted the city. The Roman emperor was also venerated as a divine figure, and imperial cult rituals were an integral part of civic life. However, the arrival of Christianity in the mid-first century began to transform the city’s religious landscape. Apostle Paul’s visits and letters to the Thessalonians marked the establishment of one of the earliest Christian communities in Greece.
