Saint Paul and the Philippians
Saint Paul and the Philippians forged a deep and true relationship, establishing early Christianity in Greece and Europe. Both women and men, Greeks, Jewish and Romans, all citizens of a wealthy city, have founded hope and solace in the words of Jesus.
Saint Paul’s connection with the Philippians was profound and enduring, a bond akin to that between a spiritual father and his children. The Philippians loved, respected, and were deeply grateful to their spiritual mentor for his guidance and salvation. In turn, Saint Paul filled with love and concern for their spiritual growth, constantly urging them to remain steadfast in their faith and to live a life worthy of Christ.
Saint Paul visited the Philippians whenever possible and corresponded with them regularly. In his letters, he encouraged them to rejoice in the Lord always, to persevere through trials, and to exhibit love, unity, and humility. He cautioned them against false teachers and the enemies of the Church, urging them to hold firmly to the truths he had taught them. Saint Paul also expressed his gratitude for their generous gifts, describing them as “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18).
The Philippians, in turn, continued to honor Paul throughout the centuries. Their reverence for him is evident in the numerous temples and pilgrimage sites dedicated to him. Archaeological discoveries, including early Christian and later monuments such as the Basilicas and the Octagon, confirm the historical accuracy of these accounts.
The abundance of elaborate and large temples in such a small area suggests that they served not only the local population but also the many pilgrims and visitors from Europe who visited the city of Philippi. The connection between Saint Paul and the Philippians has endured to this day, a vibrant and unbroken tradition. The Apostle Paul Cathedral in Kavala, the Baptistry church near the Zygactis River, the Monastery of Saint Silas on the heights of Kavala, and other sacred sites continue to commemorate the legacy of Saint Paul and his companions, including Luke, Silas, and Timothy. Philippi and the biblical Neapolis, present day Kavala are both still a highly preferred destination for pilgrims around the world, mostly from United States and Europe.

Saint Paul first landed in Neapolis, a small seaside village located on a natural port thus well protected by severe south winds from Aegean Sea, all year round. From Neapolis, which now called Kavala, Saint Paul and his companions walked approximately 15km to Philippi. Get to know more on Saint Paul and the Philippians.
